Freshwater pearls come from fresh water mussels not from salt water. Fresh water pearls are totally unique from any other type of gemstone. They are natural pearls that are seedless. There are different factors that influence the quality as well as the shape of the pearls. These factors are the ingredients present in the water, raising of the infant oyster, temperature of the water, health of the oyster, the insertion skill of the workers, disease prevention methods used, fertilization, etc.
Freshwater pearls nowadays are becoming rare and scarce. The first technique used to culture the pearls was developed by the Japanese in Japan. In this technique, the mussels shells are opened slightly small slits are cut in the mantle tissue and then a small piece of mantle tissue is inserted from the other mussel in its opening. This insertion is enough to start the production of the mother of pearls.
Today, China is one of the largest producers of the fresh water pearls. It has the resources needed for the culturing the fresh water pearls, for example it has big masses of land with a number of lakes, rivers and irrigation facilities and a pliable work facility. They use the recent technologies and techniques for cutting the edges for processing, cleaning, polishing, drilling and bleaching the pearls. This ensures that you will get pearls of excellent quality. Stringing is often done by hand nowadays. This processing imparts transparency and exclusive luster to the pearls.
Fresh water pearls are generally admired for their range of colors like pink, red, copper, bronze, lavender, green, etc. Basically, they pearls take the color of the shell in which they are formed. Fresh water pearls are great if your making antique pieces of jewelry for a collection.
