In the freshwater pearl industry, cultured freshwater pearls are sold either individually or as loose unfinished strands. When farmers select the pearls from their harvest, any freshwater pearls with spots they will first drill and hide at least one spot and let them to be used as pearl bracelet or necklace, just almost no flaw and good looking pearls are kept for good quality loose pearls.

One pearl on a necklace or bracelet does not receive as much scrutiny as say, a single large pearl on a ring would, those rated individually are much more strictly scrutinized in all aspects as they must stand out by themselves. So loose individual pearls are held to a much more stringent quality standard than those on strands. That is why loose pearl’s price is so higher than the pearl from one strand.

Since freshwater pearls are natural, they come out in a wide variety of shapes, many of which are quite unique and odd. So pearl in good regular round shape are difficult to cultivate.
